In-Class work with sources

Let's say your research question is: What long-term impact does emotional labor have on workers, the workplace and American culture as a whole?

Some preliminary database searches might take you to these three sources.

In the comments, answer the following questions for your source.

1) What *kind* of source are you looking at? Who is its audience?

2) Briefly summarize the source (you should be able to do this without reading the whole thing, at least for the first two).

3) What database do you think this writer used to find this? Why?

4) Do you think it will be a useful source for this writer? Why or why not?

  2. I don't think any of these sources are useful because either they don't answer/relate to the question being asked or not enough information!

  4. I think the second source is the best one!

  6. I believe that the second is best for the research question. It answer the question in details. It gives a lot of examples.

  7. I think the second post is the best one, IF it applies to your research topic, only because it's very realistic in terms of job requirements versus member satisfaction. That's something that can really take a toll on your job, and make you emotional about work, because you feel as though you're inferior, and your work is never done.

  8. Seems to be an emereging consensus for #2 . . any thoughts as to why?

  9. I think the second post is the most useful. It provides enough information about customer service. The first post is very long but doesn't seem so related to the other two articles. The third one is just too short.

  10. i also think the second choice is the best one because it is the most useful for the topic

  11. Also . . it's useful to ask: what *kind* of source is each one?

  12. I think maybe the second one not too long has good examples, and some good information later on in the article. It talk about emotional labor and how it affect the employees of Customer-Service rep's

  13. I also want to pick #2 source because it describes the emotional labor and has facts to support the issues on emotional labor.

  14. #3 is focused on the topic and dosn't give you useless info, it's Short and to the point.

  15. The second source would be the better choice of the three only if your research question applies to emotional labor and the service industry. The source is good because it has dept to it, yet its not prolonged. This source, I would say was found using a lexisnexis search engine.

  16. For source # 1- the kind of source we are looking at is an article analyzing gender relations in the Western Australian fishing industry. I think the writer used the LexisNexis worldwide database to find this article. I do not think that this source is useful because it does not explain long-term impacts of the workplace in American society, it talks about the Fishing industry in Australia...

Source#2-is a better source for this writer. This is a newspaper article explaining what a service worker goes through daily, which would help to better explain the long term impacts emotional labor has on this worker..

  17. the sourse doesn't really work because is too short, and the first one is too long, but the second one has a very interesting title that actually will be helpful for the writer.

  18. i pick #2 coz it described the emotional labor at workplace

  19. The second one is the best for this research question. It is article in newspaper, shorter than the first one. It explains what a service rep should do in daily. It relates to emotional labor. But the first one seems too long and it talks something about gender.

  20. The third resource link is a good resource and at the same time it isn't. So it doesn't have my vote. The reason is that the site itself uses emotional labor as a topic, but it only gives a small explanation of what emotional labor is, and a few "undetailed" examples of its role in society. However, they are advertising a book based on the topic of what was written on the site, That book could be useful, but the person must be willing to find it and maybe buy it if it's unavailable in the library. Which is why this source should be saved as "a last resort" rather than an immediate source to use.

The first source does not really tell me anything about experiences with emotional labor. Instead, the article bordes on comparisons between men and women and differences between treatment and views of the two sexes in the same working field. I got that expression right away from around the top of the site where it says "Full Text". Underneath it, next to "Abstract:". But I still took a quick glance at its contents and saw nothing of use. I mean, there was emotional labor there. But that kind of labor is something you could report about. It was "sexism" (i think that's what it's called). It's not the kind of emotional labor we were looking for that was actually required and expected of the employee in order to get the job done. Like a nurse who is supposed to provide hospitality and comfort to the patients who would be scared or worried about their condition or what their condition might be later on. That's the kind of emotional labor that's required. That's the kind we're looking for.

Thus, the only real choice left is Link no. 2 which I give my vote to. However, I can't visit the site because the computer freezes the window whenever I click on it. But I am guessing since the other two links would be the kind I would try to avoid when doing research, that it must be choice no. 2. If not, then someone is going to need more cash to spend or at least a good library nearby that has the book available. And in my opinion, looking for a book like this is too much trouble. Because there are many times that I have bought a book for research and it doesn't provide the kind of information it makes you believe it would give on the cover.

  22. I like second resource because it is a interesting article to get a idea and to start wrting. Also,I can use this article to my reserch paper to give a example.Third one just defines the conception of the emotional workers.

  23. I agree with most of the people here. The first source doesn't provide the necessary information needed to write a detailed paper on the long-term effects of emotional labor. The second source = thumbs up! It provides helpful, realistic examples of the topic. The third source just helps us understand the concept of emotional labor, but doesn't get into short-term or long-term effects. The person may have used LexusNexus to search for these articles, but I am not sure because I am not familiar with most search databases. To be honest, I am not sure how to answer these questions thoroughly, but if I do figure it out, I will update my comment.

  24. I would say source number two is helpful. The article basically talks about emotional labor and how these job effect to your health. The first source I wouldnt use it because isnt simple and I think it is complicated. The third source perhaps I could pick up some information but not like as much as source number @
